Curriculum
Fall
Soccer
In this unit the skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting will be developed. We will cover soccer rules, strategies and some soccer history. Minigames that focus on practicing skills will be played throughout the unit, with full field games occuring at the end of the unit.
Flag Football
In this unit the skills such as throwing a spirral, catching and carrying the football will be developed. Things such as football rules, strategies and information about football will be taught. Minigames that focus on throwing and catching will be played throughout the unit, with full field flag football games occuring at the end of the unit.
Cardiovascular Endurance Testing
In this unit of fitness testing we are using the FITNESSGRAM Pacer Test to look to see where students are starting the year at in regards to their Cardiovascular Endurance. This starting point information will give us a good data as to what we need to focus on during the year. Retesting of this event will occur in the Spring to see what gains were made by the scholars during the school year.
Winter
Cooperative Games
In this unit we will be focusing on games that incorporate team building, thinking, and problem solving. Students will understand that in order to succeed they must think outside the box of typical sport games.
Volleyball
In this unit the skills of bumping, setting, and serving will be practiced. We will also focus on keeping the ball up in the air by using these volleyball skills. The conclusion of this unit features a 6th Grade Student Team vs. The Faculty of Kakiat.
Racket Sport
In this unit students will have an opportunity to learn skills needed to play badminton and pickleball. We will be discussing the history, rules and strategies of the different racket sports, how they are similar and what makes them unique. Badminton will focus on the longer racket and striking the shuttle. Pickleball uses a shorter paddle with a wiffle ball, which is similar to tennis.
Floor Hockey
In this unit students will be using foam sticks and actual plastic hockey sticks. All students MUST wear goggles that will be provided during this unit. Skills such as stick handling, shooting and passing will be practiced. Mini skill games will be used throughout the unit, ultimately concluding with full gym games.
Spring
Bowling
In this unit student will be focusing on using an underhand roll to strike down pins. The concept of rolling will be a main focus. Students will take part in minigames where they will have time to working on this skill. At the end of the unit students will participate in a bowling match with each other.
Basketball
In this unit students will be learning basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and shooting. The history of basketball will be taught and rules will be explained. Students will have many opportunities to work on their skills though mini games. ****During this unit students will be completing a College Basketball Project.
Frisbee Games
In this unit the skills of throwing and catching a frisbee will be taught. Students should be able to work towards having a catch with another classmate. The goal is to be able to play in an Ultimate Frisbee style game at the end of the unit.
Kakiat Field Day
Students will conclude the school year with our Kakiat Field Day. The students will compete for their classes as they participate in events that focus on running, coordination, skills and most importantly FUN!!! This is a great day that everyone in the school looks forward too!!
